Hedwig Houben
The Hand, the Eye and It, 2013
The Hand, the Eye and It is both a sculpture and the recording of a lecture-performance in which the sculpture plays a central role. In the lecture, the hand of the artist mediates between the performer or maker (the eye) and the elusive thing or work of art (it) that wants to be made. Hedwig Houben describes the complex relationships that play a part in the creation of a work. She outlines the way in which different elements play both a literal and a symbolic role, thus emphasising the boundaries between subject and object, performer and maker, hand and eye. After Houben's work was previously shown live at Playground, this time M presents this sculptural installation with video work.
