Relational Stalinism – The Musical

Michael Portnoy (USA)

After his absurdist game show 27 Gnosis in 2013, Michael Portnoy is bringing his new performance to Playground. In a sequence of short scenes performed by a diverse troupe of dancers, actors and singers, Relational Stalinism – The Musical combines hyper-rhythmic blinking, exhausting feats of reading, operatic luggage handling, call centre language-torture games, and etc. Portnoy’s alchemical manipulation of language and movement, interspersed with satire of the current state of performance within the visual arts, result in healthy and humorous confusion.

Performers Thomas Dudkiewicz, Jimmy Guacamole, Margo van de Linde, Keyna Nara, Marjolein Vogels (replacing parts originally developed in collaboration with Evelyne Rossie), Loveday Smith and Gerrie de Vries | Commissioned by Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam in collaboration with A.P.E (Art Projects Era).
