Barbara Visser

Philippa, Rutger & East/West

fr 6 - fr 13 Nov 09 . 14:00 - 23:00
STUK Atelier 2

Throughout these works, Barbara Visser examines symmetry and deduplication. In the video, Philippa, the main character, wanders via false doors and entrances through a perfectly symmetrical house. The portraits of Rutger question the accepted beauty ideal. In East/West, Visser shows a replica of the Amsterdam inner city alongside photos of the real city. What is the status of the original? Are we drawn to similarities or differences? When does a location turn into a set? When do characters become players? Visser is also fascinated by our subjective value judgment about symmetry.
