STUK & de Appel Amsterdam

The manifold (after) lives of performance

fri 13 nov 09 . 14:00 - 18:00
Cinema ZED

While a “performance” was traditionally a one-time live event, today, performance artists are using a variety of forms to present their work. More and more, the work put into a performance might include such things as a script for remakes, personal archives, scenarios for events, ideas or texts that have an inspiring effect as in a work of art. Thus artists are more conscientious of the origin and motives of their performances. At the same time, commissioners and programmers have further developed their practices in the organisation and registration of new formats to readily capture that live moment. Through case study and broad debate, STUK and de Appel, both in Leuven and Amsterdam, will venue several special practises of such. Both days will complement each other, and will be continued at the New York PERFORMA festival a week later.

One case programmed in Leuven is TIME, the biennial multidisciplinary festival that will begin in Ghent on November 13th. Unlike previous years, guest commissioners Els Dietvorst and Dirk Braeckman will present a book rather than a series of shows and performances. At this symposium, they will elucidate their option for the book, with artists’ contributions, as an artistic statement.
