Philipp Gehmacher & Vladimir Miller
dead reckoning
Choreographer Philipp Gehmacher and video artist Vladimir Miller create a
video installation that can be viewed from all sides and that demonstrates
how each decision in favour of a particular viewing angle is at the same
time a decision against possible others. In maritime language “dead
reckoning” refers to a method of navigation that is not based on absolute
fixed points outside of the ship as lighthouses or stars. The current
position is estimated on the basis of the last determined course and
elapsed time – orientation thus becomes a constant forecast.
In Gehmacher’s and Miller’s installation, human-size projections of three
dancers on two intersecting screens stake out an image space that seems to
show us everything but in fact only shows us excerpts.
