Catherine Sullivan
The Chittendens
Before moving on to visual arts, Catherine Sullivan (USA) worked as an
actress and director. Throughout her films and installations Sullivan
investigates the characteristic nature of play and performance and the
tension between actors and the parts they play. For the five-part film
installation The Chittendens (2005) sixteen actors are
dressed up in traditional costumes linked to stereotypical historical
characters such as the Secretary, the Manager or the Muscle Man. Each of
them is subsequently linked to a particular pattern of behaviour and
emotions. While using the music of
composer Sean Griffin the artist joins music, theatre, film and
choreography together throughout space.
